Portfolio Advice Notes:
- We don’t do Webtoons, at least not yet. We can’t made a decision about scrolling-type presentation of comics.
- Instagram or swipable comics do not allow us to assess your portfolio. While it’s good to have this in your portfolio, the square format and the swipable format is limiting to comics, when the space of the page is your best friend in controlling TIME. So while these forms do bring short form gags, we cannot tell your skills in understanding space arrangement to facilitate storytelling or the passage of time.
- Similarly, we respect storyboard works and it’s complicated in its own context, however, it is not sufficient to demonstrate your ability to understand the space of the page nor panel arrangement ability nor panel sizing ability.
- We only accept comics portfolio that are intended for print or digital books, whether it’s a short, or a longform that you are sending us.
- While the traditional Comic Artist world can have separate roles from inker to colorist to letterist, we ask that for the fluidity of how our current productions work, that you are able to do all three.
- You will be guided / led on choices of color if that is not your strong suit. And we are always excited for you to grow in an area that you were not previously strong at.
- You do need to understand how lettering enhances the reading experience from sound effects to how a dialog comes across. The emphasis on certain words, the combined experience of words and images.
